A Basking Shark silver pendant necklace made on the Isle of Arran.

The basking shark is the second largest fish in the world, growing up to 12 metres long, yet this gentle giant feeds only on tiny plankton. Despite its enormous, gaping mouth, it’s completely harmless to humans. They cruise slowly at the surface, often with their huge dorsal fin cutting the water, followed by it's tail fin, like a shadowy submarine - an unforgettable sight for anyone lucky enough to see one.

Basking sharks have always felt magical to me. As a child, I was constantly on the lookout from my dad’s boat, scanning the sea for a fin or tail. Although I haven’t seen one since I was grown up, that sense of mystery has never left me.

Symbolically, they represent patience, presence, and harmony with nature - gliding through life at their own steady pace. With their calm power and elusive nature, it’s no surprise they continue to capture human imagination.
